Swedes know their place in Delaware’s colonial era

4/2/2008

On the same day Delaware was celebrating the landing of the Swedes in Delaware 370 years ago, I landed in Stockholm for the start of a five-day trip.

I was meeting people at the Royal Coin Cabinet of the National Museum of Economy, which is directly across from the Royal Palace. They told me that most Swedes are familiar with Delaware, that they know where it is and the role Sweden played in its colonization.

It seems Swedes are more familiar with us than most of American-educated schoolchildren are. That’s a sad state of affairs.
